Lauryn Hill is an American singer-songwriter, rapper, producer and actress, most known for being a member of The Fugees and for her solo album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Hill was raised in South Orange, New Jersey, and began singing with her music-oriented family. Hill had success in acting at an early age, appearing in a recurring role on the television soap opera As the World Turns and starring as Rita Louise Watson in the 1993 film Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit. At high school, Hill was approached by Pras Michel to start a band, which his cousin Wyclef Jean soon joined. They renamed themselves The Fugees and released two albums: Blunted on Reality and the Grammy Award-winning The Score, which sold about six million copies in the U.S. Combining African-American music and Caribbean music influences, Hill's rapping and singing on the latter album, including her rendition of the hit "Killing Me Softly", made her a star. Hill's tumultuous romantic relationship with Jean led to the split of the band in 1997 to focus on solo projects. The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill remains Hill's only studio album. It received massive critical acclaim, showcasing a representation of life and relationships and finding a contemporary feminist voice with the neo soul genre. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and sold about eight million copies in the U.S., spawning the singles "Doo Wop", "Ex-Factor", and "Everything Is Everything". At the 41st Grammy Awards, the work earned her five awards, including Album of the Year and Best New Artist. She won various other awards as well and became a common sight on the cover of magazines.
